What do I want my fire pit for?
First thing’s first, what is the purpose of your fire pit?
Of course, your fire pit will differ depending on what you want to use it for, where it will be located, and how you choose to store it.
Do you have a large area you can keep a fire pit in permanently, or will you need to store it? Are you planning on using the fire pit frequently or every now and again? Is the area patio or grass? Is the area enclosed or open? Can you move around your fire pit safely in its position? Will your fire pit be located too closely to surroundings that could potentially become damaged, melted, discoloured or charred when the fire pit is in frequent use?
What size fire pit should I buy?
The size of your fire pit, is once again, dependent on the purpose and the space you have available.
How many people will be using your fire pit? Will you want to use it as a BBQ also? What kind of space do you have available?
If you’re the host with the most, looking to keep everyone toasty at your parties and you have a large patio or garden area, a large, static fire pit might suit you best.
But if you are limited for space or want to take your fire pit on adventures with you, you’ll need something small, compact, and with multi-purpose cooking options.
What is the best material for a fire pit?
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel makes for a great fire pit material, this is due to its corrosion-resistant and durable nature. Stainless steel is generally lightweight and easy to maintain, however, because of all these pros, it can mean that it comes at a higher price point.
Copper
Copper is a great lightweight material and radiates heat well; this material can take more maintenance than stainless steel and can also be quite expensive.
Cast Iron
Cast iron is your budget-friendly option for a fire pit, it is a sturdy and durable material, however, this can mean it’s very heavy!
What can I burn on my fire pit?
Firstly, you will need to check with your local council on their fire pit/ burning rules and regulations before lighting up your fire pit.
If your idea of a fire pit is a traditional roaring, crackling fire, you’ll be looking to burn wood. We recommend using kindling or fire starters around dry wood to get the best fire and make sure you don’t overload your fire pit, you can always add more wood when the fire starts dying down.
Fancy a BBQ?
To cook on your fire pit, your best option will be coal, ensure the coals are white hot before you cook your food and make sure the food is thoroughly cooked through before tucking in!
Whatever you choose to burn, make sure you don’t leave a hot fire pit unattended, and you dispose of the ashes, coal, or wood according to local rules.
How do I choose a fire pit design?
Now you’ve thought about the purpose, size, and material of your future fire pit, it’s pretty easy to decide on the type of design. Simply put, what looks nice?

Once you’ve chosen a style of fire pit, it’s far easier to research what accessories are compatible.
A few accessories you may need include heat-resistant gloves, tongs, a stoker, marshmallow roasting sticks, and a BBQ grill.

How can I use my fire pit safely?
Before using your fire pit, you should know how to do so safely.
Ensure that the location you intend to light the fire pit is safe, far enough from anything that could catch fire if embers spit, and plenty of space to sit and/ or move around.
Don’t light your fire pit under a covered area such as a gazebo or canopy, the rising heat may cause damage to the cover. You are also more susceptible to smoke inhalation if the smoke cannot escape.
Always take precautions! Before you light your fire pit, you should have an extinguisher, water, or bucket of sand readily available and accessible should you need to extinguish the fire quickly.
Keep children and animals away from the fire pit if they are unsupervised.
When you have finished with your fire pit, ensure that the fire is out completely, and the ash has cooled before you leave it unattended. If you have an open fire pit or it’s a windy day, consider covering the fire pit so any remaining embers or ash do not spread.
Be mindful that the area underneath the fire pit is likely to remain hot, so take care when walking around the area.
